I frequently hear people say that they have no willpower. This is the path to take in order to get there:
- First of all, you must have interest. If you want or need to achieve something, it is essential that it interests you. We must bear in mind that wanting is not always the same as needing and that needing is not necessarily the same as wanting.
- When you already know that something interests you, it is necessary to turn that interest into intention. This is equivalent to making the decision that you are going to do what is necessary to achieve what is of interest to you. To want to go is to be going.
- Intention, in turn, has to become intent. This is formed by the set of actions through which the appropriate strategies are executed, during the time and number of cycles that this requires. Intent is the resolve to carry on moving towards the goal until it is reached.
- And, after a while of trying this, a special energy begins to grow and consolidate itself within you, which makes the effort you are making to maintain the attempt and reach your objective more bearable, that is willpower.
So, when sometimes you don't have enough willpower available to undertake a task (which would meet a need, try to resolve a problem, or open up new options for you), this is because you are trying to start out backwards. The willpower comes at the end of the process and not at the beginning (except when you are using a previously achieved or inherited will). What you really need to get started is interest, and if it is not there, you can always force it, although you'll have to make the decision to do so.
Unbending intent, which is spoken of in the path of the warrior, is the mature fruit obtained by sustaining and nurturing both the interest and the willpower obtained during a life whose meaning and purpose is guided, on the one hand, by the yearning for self-discovery, and on the other, by the recognition of the unfathomable mystery of existence. It belongs to a hierarchical rank much higher than that of conventional intent and relies on both impeccability in action and detachment from results.
